Climbing up 50 degree slopes to above 1600 metres, surrounded by thick mountain forest and wild wolves - now that's real mountain hiking. Don't be fooled now, it can get really tough!! Especially in winter when the snow is up to two and a half metres thick and a simple 2 kilometre hike can take 3 to 4 hours. But its all worth it once you've reached the mountain refuge and have your boots off and a roaring fire on the go.
Montgilbert is a protected conservation area and very remote, offering hikers mile after mile of unspoilt countryside at altitude with the promise of spectacular views and wilderness. Hikers can set off from the village of montendry and use fort montgilbert as a base camp, using a NOMAD guide or navigation their own way round the mountains.
