Montgilbert is one of the three forts around chamousset built at an altitude of 1400 metres in the alps. Sold by the state in 1966 and housing a garrison of 300 men, they had to defend the point where the valleys of the rivers isère and arc meet. It was built between 1877 and 1882 to defend one of the highest mountain tops in the region. Above you can see the main barracks of the fort.  

Although 123 years old, the fort is in remarkably good condition and all the basic amenities are available such as ablutions, hot water, hot food, sleeping quarters, fire places and a bar as well as a fully equipped classroom for lectures.

Geography
Grenoble is surrounded by mountains: to the North the chartreuse, to the West the vercors, and to the East the Belledonne range. as such, it is often visited by the tour de France.

• G renoble is famous for its walnuts, for which it enjoys an appellation of controlled origin.

• G renoble hosted the 1968 winter Olympics and is preparing to bid for the 2018 winter Olympics.  

• G renoble is also famous for its Italian quarter, the "quartier saint Laurent" and the many ski 

  resorts surrounding it.

• It is the home of rugby union team fc Grenoble, soccer team Grenoble foot 38 and ice hockey team

  brûleurs de loups.

• Jean-François Champollion and Jean-Jacques Rousseau lived there, respectively during childhood

  and a few months.
